Course Description

This course introduces concepts and provides an overview of issues related to open and concealed carry laws, the Castle Doctrine, Stand Your Ground Laws, and self defense.

This course includes video recorded from a Zoom presentation for the Butler County Bar Association's 2020 Bench Bar.

CLE Credit:

1.0 PA Substantive CLE

This course contains approximately 60 minutes of content, all of which is required for course completion.  

Your certificate of completion will be issued automatically after all elements of the course have been viewed/completed.  Credits will be reported to the CLE Board within 30 days of your completion of the course and your completion date will be reported as the day on which you actually finished the course.

Minimum System Requirements:

This course includes downloads of PDF documents (Portable Document Format) and streaming video. Viewing the documents will require Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF viewing software.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for free from the Adobe website.

The video player will run on Mac OS, Windows and Linux as well as most mobile devices and tablets on any browser that supports Adobe Flash and/or HTML5.  Supported browsers include Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9,10,11, and Microsoft Edge.  Internet Explorer 8 is not supported on Windows XP for security reasons, but is supported on Windows 7 or higher operating systems.

An internet connection with a minimum speed of 768 kilobits per second is required.  At least 5MB/sec is recommended to stream video in full HD quality.  Please note that the video player may downgrade the quality of the video to accommodate lower connection speeds.

    Michael J. Pater is a former sole practitioner located in our downtown Butler, Pennsylvania office. Michael has been helping individuals, families, and small businesses with their legal decisions since 1988. He has extensive experience in Elder Law, Estate Planning, Estate Administration, Probate Law, Medicaid Planning, Real Estate Law, Real Estate Closings, Title Searches, Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Agreements of Sale, Deed Transfers, Reverse Mortgages, Small Business Matters, and Tax Issues. Michael is also one of the attorneys for the Butler County, Pennsylvania, Area Agency on Aging. In addition Michael serves as a Mediator for real estate disputes brought to the many local Boards of Realtors and the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors.

    In addition to his service as an attorney, Michael takes time to speak to various groups, schools, nursing homes, service and senior organizations, about the issues each may face in the areas of law in which he practices.

    Michael and his wife, Donna, reside in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, and in his spare time he enjoys volunteering, attending live plays with his wife, and spending time with his family and friends. He is also a NRA Certified Instructor for the following: Pistol, Protection in the Home, and Refuse to be a Victim, and he is also Certified Range Officer. He has taught hundreds of adults on the basics of pistol shooting and has co-wrote and speaks on the subject of Think Like A Bad Guy to various organizations.

    Joe Charlton is the Founder and Managing Partner of Charlton Law. Charlton Law is the successor law firm to Charlton & Charlton, which was established by Joe and his wife, Katie, in 2011. Additionally, Joe is the President of the Freeport Area School District Foundation, which raises money for scholarships and classroom grants for Freeport Area High School students. In an effort to assist our youth in the community and provide constructive after-school activities, Joe volunteers as the Freeport Area High School Mock Trial Attorney Advisor. In addition to this, Charlton Law gives annual scholarship of $1000 or more to students who are planning on going into the legal field or law enforcement.
